It is my singular honor to greet and welcome you to tonight’s glamorous 2nd Edition of The Zimbabwe Retailers and Wholesalers Annual Awards running under the progressive theme-“ Retail Sector –Enabling Accelerated Economic Recovery & Industrialization.” This magnificent event is running for the second time since 2015. The awards event is the brain child of the CZR aimed at awarding outstanding players in the retail sector for the huge contribution to economic revival as espoused under ZIMASSET( Zimbabwe Agenda for Socio-Economic Transformation ) and the 10 point Plan . The biggest accolade of the night is The Zimbabwe Best Retailer of The Year Award and The Zimbabwe Wholesaler of the Year Award. This year’s major attraction is the newly introduced Retail Legends Award and The CZR 2016 Retail Champion Awards.
Hon Guest of Honor and Hon Vice President of the Republic, The retail sector plays a pivotal role in the national economy and our current efforts are aligned to government policy towards revival of the local industry to accelerate industrialization as alluded in this year’s theme.Industrialization is the only sure way of resuscitating the Zimbabwean economy and Africa at large , hence it has become a priority in the rest of the SADC region and the African Union (AU). His Excellency , The President of The Republic of Zimbabwe , H. E Cde R G Mugabe has taken industrialization and many other issues to the United Nations . The CZR applauds such efforts meant to build a strong economy.
Hon Guest of Honor , Sir . The CZR is ceased with your current efforts and critical role you are playing in promoting the easy of doing business in the country while acknowledging government’s commitment to revive local industry and taming the harsh economic environment.
The Guest of Honor, and Hon VP , this year’s awards come on the back of many economic challenges in the year 2016 that I will not bore you and the house with. However chief among them include the the liquidity challenges in the economy. This has affected many , a business. This has also affected the telegraphic transfares(TTs) and has seen most companies failing to access raw materials and other goods that we might not still be able to procure locally. There was resistance on the impending introduction of the bond notes though it has subsided due to more and more clarity by the RBZ currently. The retail sector will embrace the bond notes.
The CZR has been quite engaged in 2016 and embarked on quite a number of programs . The current work on coming up with the National Retail Database is commendable . This will help economic and industrial planning. We hope to complete this by Dec 2017. The CZR held a breakfast meeting on S.I 64 at this hotel and was graced by the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Hon Mike Bimha and The Reserve Bank Governor , Dr John Mangudya and business community at large. The S.I 64 has started bearing fruits as local companies have increased capacity utilization to levels never anticipated before.
There is need to ensure stability of pricing in the country and everything that we do should be focused on the people and improve the living standards and health of our customers. I would like to applaud the RBZ on their current efforts to educate consumers about the Bond notes . There is need to expedite the procurement and installation of POS machines in the face of the current cash challenges. The cost of money has also become another animal that business never anticipated and promotion of exports to curtail the unsustainable import bill suffices in order build and augment foreign currency reserves.
The Guest of Honor and Hon VP, allow me to thank the sterling work that our industry , the retail and wholesale sector has played to sustain the economy . We applaud your efforts to improve the environment under which business has been forced to operate. It is indeed befitting that tonight , we award those that where outstanding in the year 2016 despite the challenges and still remain optimistic that 2017 will be a better year for business. It is never about individual business award but the collective efforts by business , government and labour . Allow me to thank the retail sector players and their employees for a job welldone . Thank you retail sector team members and keep the fire burning. Remain resilient and lets all work for the good of our beloved Zimbabwe.
I thank you
